Dunno about the reviews…

I recently upgraded to a couple of 280′s to my system.
I’m running four monitors, three through TH2GO and one below for instruments (I run a VC view on the lower monitor to match up with the three above).

Getting the following framerates:

Around cities and busy airports = 23 – 37
Coastlines = 30 – 47
Bush flying = 40 – > 50

Running the sim with ORBX recommended settings for their FTX products.

I’ve bought a GTX280, and so far I must say, I wish I hadn’t. Even my EN 8800 GTS performed much better. I hope this is a driver or tweakproblem since my time to return the card is allmost expired. Does anyone knows has tips to improve this card? Or can I better go for another one?

I seriously doubt a driver update (or many) will regain 33% performance loss over the 8800GTX Ultra — keeping in mind this is just to get back to being ON PAR with the 8800GTX Ultra, NOT exceeding it.

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but don’t look for a driver miracle to cure this issue. Considering the GTX 280 doubles fps in other titles, it seems odd that FSX suffers so much.

But for now, I would NOT recommend to anyone that they buy a GTX 280 if FSX is important to them. Perhaps this is just a sign of how dated the FSX engine really is and how badly it needs to be re-written. I know the Train Simulator group are re-writing almost all of the FSX engine and they found it to be terribly dated and not adequate to current hardware levels.

Hi Mario, I fully agree that benchmarks other than FSX are of no use for the flightsim industry.
The best indication for the presently lame drivers is the one benchmark where the 9800GX2 outperforms the new G280 GTX… If you look at the technical specifications of those two and keep in mind that FSX does NOT support two GPUs then this obviously must be driver issue.
Oh well… nVidia Drivers have been poor for years now… too bad.

For shure Marcus, I think the same, I was following the G200 developement with high interest and the first results have been quite dissapointing. But, everything says that it will be a great card (I want one!). Mostly, I tried to point out that Guru3d reviews are useless for us cause TomÂ´s Hard is the only one that use FSX for their tests. Amand does more tech precision reviews in depth, and I like both of them much more.

Well yeah but this is for sure a driver issue. It is unlikely that the 8800 Ultra will outperform the G280 later on once better and more matured drivers arrive.

Guru3D reviews are useless for fs community. They dont test the hardware under FSX. TomÂ´s hardware does always. In fact they demonstrate that an 8800 ultra STILL beats and outperforms a G280 monster. Amandtech did a much better and objective review than G3D too.
