FlyByWire Simulations has dedicated the past four years to enhancing the A320 experience in Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) with their popular A32NX project. Building on this success, they announced and recently released the A380X, an ambitious open-source project bringing the iconic Airbus A380 to MSFS. The team, comprised of over 170 contributors, has created a realistic, feature-rich aircraft with custom systems, high-fidelity sounds, and a detailed model. Available now for free download via the FBW Installer, this “developer preview” release in open alpha offers users an early look and invites developers to contribute to the project’s ongoing evolution.

For end-users, the A380X open alpha includes a range of working systems and features while still being actively developed. Users can expect operational flight management, flight displays, and systems such as electrical and environmental controls, along with advanced features like Brake to Vacate, Runway Overrun Protection, and the Onboard Airport Navigation System. FlyByWire has set preliminary system requirements, cautioning that performance may vary due to the current 3D model and system code not being fully optimized. Although some features remain inactive in this early release, the A380X supports basic VATSIM operations, with updates expected as development continues.

Looking ahead, FlyByWire plans to ensure compatibility with MSFS 2024, though a specific A380X version for the new simulator will require additional adaptation time. The team aims for a seamless transition but notes that adjustments in system requirements and optimization may delay a full, optimized release for MSFS 2024. FlyByWire has expressed gratitude to their community and contributors for supporting this open-source journey and plans to keep updating the A380X with new features and improvements based on user feedback.
