There have been a couple of announcements from Dovetail Games regarding their Steam Edition version of FSX today – a public beta test version of a patch, plus a new add-on pack. “Cargo Crew” is the second DLC available through Steam exclusively for DTG’s version of FSX and comprises 20 missions which will require you to deal with challenges, failures and a few popular airports, featuring a new co-pilot voiced by Angel Heaven Lee. Simultaneously with the new release, the support team have announced a 7-day (14/04/2015 – 21/04/2015) public beta of a new build for the sim, with a…

Any child of the 80s is already humming the Airwolf tune after seeing that image above, but although it’s not Hawke and Santini you’ll be playing in Flight Tales II for MS FSX, Aerosoft do hope that it’ll get your adrenal glands working overtime. The add-on comprises 16 missions including combat training, rescue, fights against the elements and races against AI opponents – as well as the one seen above. Find out more here.

Dovetail’s rapid release schedule is hitting again, with both a Flight Simulator and Train Simulator add-on released within the last two days. The Train Sim add-on, to deal with that quickly, is the British “Midland Mainline” or, as usual, part of it – from London St. Pancras to Bedford. The 55 mile route can be found here. The FSX:SE addition, which will be of more interest to our readership is “Dangerous Approaches” by Jane Whittaker, featuring 30 “nail biting” missions – not just flight plans this time – requiring specific procedures to be followed in order to execute a safe…

Although this package is only usable by those who already have Flylogic’s “Switzerland Professional” package, DFS’s Swiss Glacier Pilot volume 2 provides those who do with an additional aircraft in the form of the Fieseler Storch by Simon Smieman/Kurt Stöckli and a number of missions to fly in FSX utilising the ten included glacier landing strips. One of the missions requires that Volume 1 be installed, but all come with voiceovers, guidance and rewards at the end. More details can be found alongside purchase information at the product page.

Africa is a very much overlooked part of the FS world – not only in the Microsoft sim series, but pretty much across the board. Rolling Cumulus Software, whose normal area of operations covers the backcountry areas of South America, have now expanded into what is sometimes referred to as The Dark Continent with Africa Bush Pilots Inc. The package includes scenery upgrades, flights and missions, along with two repaints for freeware models. Full details can be found here.

Trains, rickshaws, Hindustan Ambassador cars, maybe even the odd aeroplane! These are just some of the things you’ll find during a tour of Aerosoft’s new scenery covering Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. The Hindu holy city on the Ganges river is served by Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VIBN/VIS), which has a single 9000′ runway 09/27 and serves primarily internal and regional carriers. This scenery by Andreas Kozma includes a representation of the city, as well as the airport itself, with all major buildings recreated. The publisher describes it as “easy on frame rate and your wallet” so you might…

Roussillon Aéro Simulation have laid down a challenge with their 2nd “Fly the Cessna 172” package – that of navigating across France using Radio navaids against the clock in either the default FSX C172, or the Carenado C172 (not included within the package) if you prefer. “The first stages are relatively easy because your co-pilot gives you all the necessary information to end the stage. After two stages you will be on your own onboard. You will have to calculate the time which you will need to fly from a point A to a point B without losing you in…

New from Simple FSX Missions comes “Challenging Approaches”, a series of – as the names suggest – approach missions for MS FSX, designed to be in the developers’ words, “fun and not impossible to complete like other missions”. Unlike some of their previous missions, the ten approaches included here are designed to test your skills so come under the headings of “Advanced” and “Expert”. In the “Advanced” missions, you will be following the instructions of your co-pilot to bring you safely in to land in various locations around the world, whereas the “Expert” ones require you to follow ATC instructions…

If edge of the envelope flying is your objective, then this mission pack from Dave Chapman is designed to give you the opportunity to do just that. Test Pilot – Pushing the Envelope requires FSX Gold or the Acceleration expansion. All eight missions use the default aircraft and provide you with ample opportunity to mess up and dent more than just your pride, as they range from testing takeoff speeds and angles in a B747-400, through handling at the upper limits of the atmosphere, to a low level simulated attack run in the F/A-18 Hornet. Simple FSX Missions have released another pack of ten FSX activities, described by the authors as “…more challenging and some missions require more flying experience, like the use of the Air traffic Control (ATC)and ILS landing experience. But they are fun and not impossible to complete like other missions.” The four intermediate and six Expert level flights are all timed between 30 to 60 minutes and take place around the world, providing the user with a reward upon completion for each mission.
