Anything look familiar?

ss_4fcdba3c0f8446ccd82fe5d8d4291c10b9f4081f.1920x1080If you fancy a blast from your simming past, a quick glance at the Steam “new releases” today will have you reaching for the credit card, as the Microprose’s Fleet Defender – The F-14 Tomcat Simulation and F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0 have been added to the line-up by Retroism.

Both of the new titles are on 25% off sale until 6th November, as is the classic B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th. Be warned however… The price may be low, but the graphics quality will make you feel older than the seeing the original release dates, perhaps? 😉

  1. The “Gunship” that’s on there isn’t the Microprose one, it’s a “re-imagining”, which is rarely a good thing. I’d love M1 Tank Platoon (it wasn’t an A2, it had the 105 rifle, not a 120mm smoothbore! ;)) but most of all, if highly unlikely, I’d love to be able to use Digital Integration’s “Tornado” again. I really do miss that, but unfortunately have never been able to get a joystick or the sound working, when running it through DOSBOX or equivalent emulators.

  2. I remember M1TP2, I just preferred the original (although apparently I was wrong, it was the M1A1, so did have the Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore. My mistake).

It’s being advertised a lot as “abandonware”, which it isn’t, because I know the entire Microprose brand and all titles was purchased. I guess the owners aren’t trying that hard to protect their older IP… 😉

  3. I have been playing B-17. It is still a very good game and offers a lot of depth. Even by today standards I would argue that this is more technically accomplished than most games now. Back then they really cared about the product and it shows. You can tell that the guys who made it loved it and had a passion for making great games.
