Flight1 reveals the 162 Skycatcher project

We haven’t heard about a new project from Flight1 for months, although we were sure they would be close to announce some thing.

Now done, Steve Halpern confessed. It will be the 162 Skycatcher, not many infos though. “Just” it is being designed in partnership with the manufacturer, that is a good point.

  1. Erm, this was announced in November 2009…

Sadly, last progress report was back in July, and the topic in their official forum has been sidetracked since then by irrelevant waffle about a completely different model. Why they aren’t able to open a separate forum topic for that product and leave the focus on the Skycatcher I don’t know, but there is no news to report since that time.

  2. Yes, but that isn’t a Skycatcher, and it would seem a peculiar choice for an experienced developer who has forums for EVERYTHING to not at least give the Skylane it’s won topic…

As it happens, there is now more information – and more current information – about the Skylane in the Skycatcher thread than the Skycatcher itself.

Which makes this news item all the more puzzling.

  3. Not sure how our forum link got posted here as news. + the comment of Steve Halpern saying “Now Done” I don’t recall that was ever said and I am running that project.

The Skycatcher thread certainly was fragmented and morphed into other things and is now separated and cleaned up. Thanks for spanking us on that, I was tired of the direction the thread was headed myself.

As soon as we have solid news, we will make that news known, but you can be sure it is an official project with Cessna partnership (as the Mustang was) and we are well along on it.

  4. Yes, I noticed the topic had been split into the relevant parts. Cleared things up nicely. Looking forward to the Skycatcher, less so the 182, although any alternative to the mediocre systems modelling of the pretty picture specialists in the GA market would be welcomed.

  5. If you’ve got X-Plane on your PC, Mac, or Linux box, I’ve built a freeware Skycatcher add-on, that’s available over at http://www.stevestillblogs.com
X-Plane’s predictive flight model means “all” I had to do was plot a precise 3D model of the plane, specify it’s control surface parameters–control geometry etc… ok maybe a few hundred parameters… but in return I’ve been able to see how the plane would behave, even here in Calgary where the base elevation is 3,557 MSL. Fun times.
It’s a work in progress, but again, it’s free and ready to fly.
