The French airbase is actually in the republic of Djibouti, which is across the other side of the Red Sea, opposite Yemen. It’s adjacent to Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.
Interesting to see it modelled. I landed there to refuel en route to Nairobi many years ago. It was rather run down in those days.

You are right, Jb, I wish to mention then, that since Djibouti went an independent country, the base is shared with USA, too!
